I know that you’re here in Macau as I am, as well. And we’ve seen some interesting things happening over the course of the week with the surprise announcement that the Macau Jockey Club was going to be effectively relinquishing its concession. Did that strike you as a surprise?

The speed with which the decision was made – and it came out of the blue a little bit. But it was something that was bound to happen at one stage, or they were going to be given a warning to improve. I was surprised that it was cut cold turkey like that, as opposed to them being given some more time to, improve … or else. But I think it was another strong and clear message that the government is not messing around. Similar to what they did with the junkets last year. I think it was it was a strong move.

O Presidente chinês reuniu-se ontem com o Chefe do Executivo, que foi a Pequim apresentar o relatório do trabalho desenvolvido pelo Governo da RAEM. No encontro, citado pela agência estatal Xinhua, Xi Jinping afirmou que, ao longo do ano, Ho Iat Seng, levou o Governo da RAEM a desempenhar as suas funções “de forma conscienciosa e pragmática”.

Xi aplaudiu a aprovação da lei relativa à defesa da segurança do Estado, bem como a apresentação das novas leis eleitorais. Além disso, o Presidente destacou também os trabalhos de desenvolvimento da Zona de Cooperação Aprofundada em Hengqin e a recuperação económica da região, ao mesmo tempo que se mantiveram a “harmonia e a estabilidade da sociedade”. “O Governo Central reconhece plenamente o trabalho do Chefe do Executivo Ho Iat Seng e do Governo da RAEM”, afirmou Xi Jinping, citado pela Xinhua.

 Relativamente ao movimento que se opôs à Proposta de Lei intitulada “Regime de Garantia dos Titulares do Cargo de Chefe do Executivo e dos Principais Cargos a Aguardar Posse, em Efectividade e Após Cessação de Funções” em 2014, Chui Sai On, o então Chefe do Executivo, agiu de forma decisiva e corajosa, e anunciou a retirada da Proposta de Lei, evitando assim uma crise que teria provocado conflitos e o caos.

CE delivers 2024 policy address, prioritises economic recovery and diversification

The Macau SAR government is poised to drive the city’s overall economic recovery in 2024 by focusing on the development of tourism industry and the implementation of the ‘1+4’ economic diversification strategy, Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng said during the presentation of the Policy Address for 2024 at the Legislative Assembly.

Eight key priorities are outlined in the Policy Address for 2024, including safeguarding national security, economic diversification, improving the quality of life for residents, governance quality, construction of smart and green city, strengthening education system, integration of Macau and Hengqin, and aligning with the nation’s development.

CE emphasised that the government would implement an active fiscal policy with an appropriate level of public investment in the next fiscal year, focusing on the development of transport, infrastructure, public facilities, and public housing projects.

In the coming year, several key projects will be launched across the city’s four major industries to bolster the advancement of the ‘1+4’ economic diversification strategy.

“These efforts will surely provide new impetus and support for Macau’s economic recovery, enhance people’s quality of life, and facilitate moderate economic diversification,” the city’s leader said.

The Macau government is estimated to record around MOP107 billion (US$13.33 billion) in public revenue and MOP105.9 billion in expenditure next year, generating a surplus of MOP1.1 billion.
